SOCIAL LISTENING

When it comes to brands, we see brands that come into the spotlight and brands that disappear from the spotlight. But there are times when being in the spotlight isn't so good. With so many brands to choose from, I decided to pick Drunk Elephant. This is a well-known makeup brand that recently caught the spotlight in a negative way.

When you think of a makeup or skincare line you think of a young adult, not young children. What is interesting is that the Drunk Elephants brand pulls in a lot of younger children for their products. People are saying that it isn't right for the brand to sell to kids eight years old using polypeptides or zinc and copper gluconates. Drunk Elephant is a brand that is "We are committed to using only skin-friendly, research-backed ingredients that either directly benefit the health of the skin or support the integrity of our formulations. We never take into account whether something is synthetic or natural, instead choosing ingredients based on biocompatibility." Some of the good things of this brand is the high rates they have. One dermatologist blogged how if it is even worth the money to spend on Drunk Elaphant, Dr. Rose states that the retniol cream by Drunk Elaphant because it is an anti aging cream that uses retniol and peptides.

Another blogger Wang talked about the brand as well, she goes into talking about how the brand is top rated at Sephora and claims to be using "clean" ingredients. A downside she had when trying out this skincare line was the price.

I next went to my favorite site, Sephora. You can purchase Drunk Elephant in stores exclusively at Sephora and Ulta. So, I went online to Sephora and read some comments. This brand is a hit or miss for some people; some buy it for the look and definitely not the price, and some get it for the actual product and what they paid for.

Some of the things Drunk Elephant is trying to promote on its website are the Trunk 8.0. This is a carry-on that Drunk Elephant is selling with ten of its full-sized products inside, and it retails for $595.00. You will see posts on their Lippe Blam and Beam Me Up skincare when you head to their Instagram. Different products for different customers are a good idea for wanting to branch out to various audiences, younger or older. With their marketing, they have tons of products to try, from skincare to haircare to body care. They have got you covered. As someone who puts a lot of effort, time, and money into my skincare and haircare routine, I find it very hard to sell skincare and haircare. You are tackling those two different things because they each need their attention. Ensuring you pay attention to detail and not putting any sulfates, silicon, or parabens in the hair is essential to keep it clean and healthy. I stick to one brand for hair and one for skincare, so you don't mix all the chemicals. I would say Drunk Elephant is good at drawing in customers because it has the advantage of a young audience, and that young audience shares with friends and friends of friends. They also have bright colors that catch people's eyes when shopping online, scrolling on Instagram, or shopping in person.

A good question to ask is whether the brand reached out to those who loved or didn't like their product. The answer is yes and No. On the Sephora website, they did not reply to anyone. If you go onto their Instagram page, they like the comments but don't reply and acknowledge the customer more. They only respond to a question they know they can answer. In my eyes, the brand should reply to some customers to engage with them more on a deeper level; once brands go big and viral, they forget about the customer, and the customer is the reason they are who they are.

If I were the brand manager, I would make brand trips with influencers, which is typical in the beauty community. Still, I would also put the time and effort into reaching back to the customers and connecting with them again on a deeper level. It is important to keep marketing your brand by showing new products or even reshowing products to have new eyes see them. Their marketing team on that side is good; just reaching out to the customers could take a little work.

This assignment did help me see myself taking on the role of thinking like a marketer. I like how I got to dig deeper in doing the research and showing others what I gathered.
